Senator Duckworth's military career began in 1992 when she joined the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Hawaii. She later received her commission as a second lieutenant and became a helicopter pilot in the Army Reserve. In 2004, while serving in Iraq as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, her helicopter was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade, causing her to lose both of her legs and severely injuring her right arm. Despite her injuries, Duckworth continued to serve and received a Purple Heart for her bravery.
After her military service, Duckworth became an advocate for veterans' rights and served as the director of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs.
In 2016, Duckworth ran for the U.S. Senate and became the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress in Illinois and the first disabled woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate.
Duckworth's military service, along with her personal experiences and dedication to public service, have shaped her advocacy for veterans' rights, healthcare access, women's rights, and many other issues.
